The (Extra)ordinary Life of Jimmie Mayfield
I was lucky enough to read the first two Jimmie Mayfield novels as a beta reader and now I’m waiting impatiently for the third book. The first book is fresh and surprising, the characters are believable, sympathetic and funny and they grow and change through the second book. The story line is fun, energetic and a bit nostalgic. One of the best short stories I've found on here! The accents were great (usually written dialect just annoys me), and there was so much detail without feeling like it was crammed in. And as far as accuracy....well, that part with the map sure fixed that. Though it's a bit sobering to think about how the methods used in the end could so easily fit situations today.

That Ending. Solid writing and storytelling skills throughout. Believable characters. Premise has been done before, but author keeps it fresh (setting is Canada) and has added his own spin to Cthulhu Mythos. No spoilers here, but that ending...wow! Author doesn’t pull any punches. In "It Hides in the Village," Troy Young continues building upon the Lovecraftian theme along with character development and interaction. RCMP officer Joe Mills and Canadian Ranger Sgt. Pete Ivalu are given a mission by the somewhat enigmatic Harjit Singh. There is the usual 'if we are going to be partners' dance of I'll have your back as long as you have mine. Each has experienced The Other and come out on the other side of insanity mostly unscathed.
I am enjoying these stories but still feel that some grammatical shortcuts have been taken that are all too common in writing today. Madelon Wilson, December 2, (via Amazon.com)*****

Excellent collection of Canadian set Lovecraft Mythos stories. I liked them so much I read the individuals singly and then bought the collection as a paperback so I could read the bonus story. I really like the way a wider story is threaded through each individual story. And I've said this repeatedly in my story reviews, but Lovecraft rarely, if ever bothered with the personalities of his story protagonists, and as much as I love his cosmic horror, I love some character development. Troy Young maybe doesn't quite get to H.P.'s heights with the former, but he certainly trups him on great characters. Highly recommended for Lovecraft fans.

Another great installment in this series. I really like how the writer uses Lovecraft's creations in a more modern and character-focussed way. He's not as nihilistic as old H.P. but acknowledges that aspect to the stories and concepts. The humanity he adds makes them very readable.

A real change of pace for this series – and a welcome one. Adele from the first cycle of stories, is back – at least her mind is – her body is still in the coma she was left in at tghe end of Book 1. This story is more metaphysical than action based. We get more information on just what is going on with the Outer Gods and the Elder Gods. We also begin to learn who is pulling what strings and to what end.
It's great to have Adele back and Harjit now has some work to do based on hwat she has found out. I look forward to seeing hpw this pans out. Excellent stuff as always.

These stories are definitely becoming more complex and layered as they build towards the conclusion. This one had three fairly distinct sections, mini-stories that comprised to make the larger one which was a nice change of pace. I enjoyed meeting new team member Charlene Hines. Her back story was interesting and tragic, so in keeping with the rest of the characters. And it was great (and also slightly sad) to catch up with Malcolm. Now I just have to wait patiently for the next one...

A fittingly exciting closing chapter of Book 2. The writer does a really great job of adapting Lovecraftian concepts to the present day and making them equally exciting and overwhelming and believeable. I can't wait for Book 3...

I just love this series of long short stories/short novellas. This is the first part of the second cycle of stories and I would recommend them to horror fans – especially to Lovecraft fans who might like more a human approach to the master's cosmic horror. I've got the next few installments cued up on my kindle and I can't wait to read them!
